Lost In Translation

Today we explored the choreographic process called lost in translation.

There were 5 people in our group and we all stood in a vertical line fairly spread out with one person facing forwards and everyone else facing the back. The 1st person would have a few moments to create 1 count of 8 of movement relating to a word our teacher had given us before the lesson and then, the person behind would watch the 1st person do the phrase once through and then would have to repeat that movement with the 3rd person turning to watch only the 2nd person and then down the line until the last person tries to complete movement however the idea is you only see it once, so by the final person the movement has most likely been changed as in theory you wouldn't be able to accurately remember after seeing it only once, hence "lost in translation".

So we were each given a word to think about when choreographing our small phrase, mine being falling, therefore it was important I incorporated movements to portray this.
To emphasise that I implemented the use of levels beginning very high on demi-pointe and ending on the floor, as you can see in the video attached below. I also used embellishment of the arms, in the beginning, to add more impetus to the rocking motion and to further imply falling.

After each person took their turn we filmed the original phrase and the final phrase of each line so that we could see side by side how the movement progressed as it went on, as you can see in my phrase by the end the person no longer stayed on the floor which largely contrasted to my original movement as that was meaningful to my original stimulus of falling.

Shortly after this we then used both the beginning and end phrases to come up with a small section of choreography by combining them together in a collaborative way, coming up with new small transitions and using choreographic devices such as orientation, levels, canon, and embellishment to make the simplistic movements more interesting.
