Composition and Structure
Our choreography begins with 4 of us dancing an ensemble piece with Emma as a soloist, this metaphorically representing a sexual assault event. This section also fits the word isolation from the list of different effects of sexual assault.
There's one significant moment where we travel towards Emma in the front right corner from the stage left back corner, and the idea is she's trapped in that corner whilst we travel towards her to attack. This corner will also then have significant moments running through the whole piece. We then let this transition into Emma's solo which is portraying how vulnerable someone may feel after experiencing something like that, and it's an expression of the shame and upset you could go through, we then join Emma, and the idea of this is we are now all representing our own stories of, pain and trauma. Moving on into the trio section, this represents minimising and is supposed to emphasise has some may shut down what they have been through in order to make it feel less real however, we didn't use everyone as not every victim would react in this way. However significantly Ben and I stay on stage in a seated position, this is to show that even if we aren't affected in that specific way we are still present and still suffering.
This then slowly transitions into the 2 vs 2 section, this is where boundaries start coming into play, the idea of this section is to show how you may start breaking these boundaries you trap yourselves in however they can be broken in very different ways hence the idea of one person being your partner and the other one opposite being someone you are against, hopefully conveying the element of comfort you look for from other people, but also the possibility of fighting those you care about. So it's to really highlight those contrasts In emotion that can come with the confusion faced after the trauma.
The next Section is the duet, this is where we want to start to delve into the more positive boundary-breaking and start the thought of regaining trust, so throughout there will be elements of question and answer where Ben does a movement followed by my movement response, and also it will incorporate some small simple lifts and this will be the first real partner work in the piece, so it's the first opportunity to really put that trust in one another, this relating to how it may take a very long time for someone to regain trust in others after a sexual assault encounter.
Finally, after the duet we all come back in to do an ensemble ending, this will incorporate a lot more hands-on movements, and contact with each other lifts that involve the whole group and also the significance of holding hands. This is in the hopes of further showing the healing process and the way in which trust slowly grows back over time, so it begins in the duet and continues to blossom throughout until the end. We will also do a walking and gesture section near the end of our piece and this is a very significant section as we will be walking around in the pattern of the awareness ribbon on the floor, to bring back the motif from the beginning section and maintain it until the end. We will also then do the gestures facing the corner that has significance from that beginning section, to highlight the effect those experiences have and how it never goes away even when you are healing.
Throughout I think we will use a lot of repetition of movements but adapt them to match each style or use embellishment to perhaps turn a solo movement into something that could be performed in a group context.
